What is an Independent Midwife?

An Independent Midwife (IM) is a fully qualified midwife who works privately and independently, outside of institutions, such as the NHS.

As an IM, I have the freedom to provide evidence-based, individualised, continuity of care. It is my role to prioritise you and your care and I provide bespoke and individualised support, tailored to you.

Childbirth is a transformative rite of passage. I aim to support and nurture you. From the big conversations to being present in the little moments, I'm here by your side, for what you need, as you step into Motherhood.

What is antenatal care?

* Antenatal care is the care you receive from a midwife or other healthcare professional throughout your pregnancy.
* As an independent midwife, I see my clients on a regular schedule that is flexible to each family’s needs.
* The usual pattern of visits is approximately every 4 weeks for the first 28 weeks, then every 2-3 weeks until 36 weeks, and finally every 1-2 weeks until birth.
* I am available between visits via text or phone, so your questions can be answered quickly, helping to ease any anxieties you may have.

What are visits like?

* Visits take place in your home at a mutually convenient time and are not rushed or hurried.
* Each visit usually lasts around 2 hours and includes a mix of clinical checks (such as blood pressure, urinalysis, palpation of the abdomen, and assessment of the baby’s growth) and personal discussions. We talk about your experiences and preferences and get to know each other, fostering a relationship—a ‘professional friendship’—where you can rely on me for support.

I absolutely love offering care in this way. I feel so honoured and grateful to get to know the families in my care and to be able to provide support in this way.

Recently completed a discharge appointment, after 6 months of care with this family ♥️

It has been an honour to witness and support their transition into parenthood, and to see their little one grow into her own character. (And to see their dog become a great big brother 😎)

Bittersweet - so wonderful to see them thriving, and I will miss our visits. We will keep in touch 🤗

I was gifted this beautiful artwork, ‘The Tree of Life.’ A story about how our lives have interwoven with one another, of new life, new beginnings, growth, and a beautiful nod to the placenta. So special. So thankful 🫶🏼

My new beast of a book! 📕

Accompanied by the exciting news that I am completing a diploma in Breastfeeding from the Centre for Breastfeeding Education and Research (CBER).

Essentially, a year long of studying all things breastfeeding, with the plan to register as internationally certified lactation consultant next year!

Breastfeeding support is such a huge passion of mine, and it is so needed for so many reasons. I spend so much of my time, as an independent midwife, offering this support, I’m so thrilled to be able to expand my knowledge and expertise, and offer this support to more motherbaby dyads! 🤱

✨ ARM RETREAT 2023 ✨

A week away in Wales, surrounded by beautiful views, eating delicious foods (sadly not pictured, as all eaten before we had the chance) and sharing wonderful stories between women, midwives and birth-workers alike.

An opportunity to be together, to be present, to share and to support.
When women gather, magic happens. And, in this case, magic means mulling over maternity care reforms over coffee/soup/scones/stew/pavlova/etc.

Feel so grateful to have access to the wisdom of these women and midwives. What a week, so good for the soul!

In sync with Breastfeeding Week; the first recommendation is one from @lalecheleague_gb all about breastfeeding and sweet, sweet sleep! 💤

Have you read it? What books about breastfeeding or sleep would you recommend?

🤱 What do you really need to breastfeed?

Well, firstly. You need breasts and a baby. And you may well not need anything beyond that 👀

However, as you go through the lists of newborn ‘essentials’ and products you ‘need’ to before baby, you may come across recommendations for breastfeeding products galore!

I would advise you to lean off the online shopping for now and save your money to be spent on either antenatal education, postnatal support from a lactation consultant, or hiring an independent midwife. This hands-on support really is invaluable. And if you end up not needing this support, then great. Treat yourself with the money you saved ♥️

If complexities arise in your feeding journey, and suddenly you need to get a breast pump, bottles or other equipment, then be rest assured that these items are easily available for same day collection or next day delivery, and if be sure to ask your midwife if they have any equipment they can lend you in the interim (I have a collection of basic things if needed).

Just look at this glorious set up for a client who is expecting her baby over the next month 🥰

The gentle glow of soft light, surrounded by affirmations of love, in the tranquility of her home. No, you don’t need a picturesque set-up to give birth. You have everything you need within yourself. 💘 But who could deny that labouring in this environment would be deeply encouraging and supportive, as you separate from reality, and go within to bring your baby to earth.
